Boss scolds employee during performance review for doing the bare minimum, while also claiming that she meets all of her goals: 'If they want to see bare minimum they’ll for sure see it starting now.'

Talk about a contradictory statement!

In the workplace, you get a lot less feedback than you got when you were in school. When you're a student, nearly everything you do gets graded, and your grade lets you know how you are doing in the class. If you were lucky, your teacher would write specific feedback on your essays, and you would know exactly what you needed to do next time to be better. A lot of us, myself included, took this feedback for granted when we were in school. We would rather do anything else than look back at the essays we wrote the night before they were due and read our teacher's critiques. Now, I would give anything for my professors to give me the kind of feedback on my actual work that I got on my schoolwork.

In the workplace, managers and bosses don't have time to constantly monitor their employees and evaluate their work. They have their own work to complete, and they should be able to trust that their employees can get their jobs done without being constantly monitored over every little thing. Performance reviews exist so bosses can formally give their employees feedback once a year, rather than constantly throughout the year, as a professor would. That's all well and good, but sometimes the performance review is not helpful at all. Sometimes the feedback is so vague, it's unclear what your boss even wants from you. That's definitely the case with the employee in this story.
